Can anyone shed some light on my mysterious shudder? Shudder associated with turning and acceleration? The most likely thing is that it is still the CV joints. Almost all CV joint replacements these days are remanufactured…and not well. I once went back four times myself on my car. I got tired of that game and replace them myself now.
You get the CV axles made for it. This really is a puzzler. No problem before the tires and CV joint replacement, and afterward, shudders? Only 70K miles on this car? Why did you go to shop X in the first place?
Before you visited shop X, did you notice any funny-sounding noises, clicks, scrapes, knocks, etc, when you come to stop sign, stop, then turn right and accelerate from a dead stop while turning a sharp right or left? In any event, I never had any shuddering problem at all. They just take your drive shaft with the CV joints on each end out, and send it to the rebuilder.
Meanwhile the rebuilder has already sent a rebuilt unit supposed to be identical to Shop X. I think Shop X may have accidentally put on a unit with the incorrect length shaft in one side or the other. Tester may be on the right track, or…it might be due to the known issues with the center differential on CR-Vs of this era.
If you have never changed the diff fluid on this car, it should be done anyway. And, it is just possible that doing this maintenance may resolve the shudder problem that you are reporting.
Any other fluid will cause more problems than you currently have. Thank you for your suggestions, all. My troubles continue. To answer a few of your questions, I did not have a chance to drive the car between the tire replacement and the new cv joints. The only thing that I noticed prior to all of this was that occasionally when I made a very sharp turn into a parking spot I noticed what felt like slippage of the tires on the pavement. As I live in Oregon now and the pavement is often wet I wrote this off as actual slippage.
I am sorry to hear of this issue.. Or, honda refuses to fix it. Most likely the torque converter. Keep on them. My parents had to have their transmission replaced and the car was less than a year old.
Good luck. I have a CRV with the same problem, except I had shudder even at highway speeds. I always thought it was weird that Honda recommends a transmission oil change so soon as compared to other car makers. What a difference! But, the thing is, I found this out too late, as the vehicle still shudders at the same speed as mentioned in this blog MPH and getting worse.
So I bought some time. I hope this helps someone — I live in VT where the vehicle shifts a lot due to the hilly nature of the area. I am from Australia. Bought Honda CRV in with 5 year warranty. Started getting shudder at cruising speed of about k after about 50, km running. Servicing up to date with the dealer which by the way is very expensive.
Complained with the dealer couple of times, finally the dealer acknowledged that there is a problem and identified it as issue with the torque converter. Honda Australia took ages to agree to repair it under warranty. Finally they did. Have lost faith in Honda, its quality! Will never buy a Honda again. Thanks for this forum, gave me some peace of mind that I am not alone! Bought my wife a CRV in I will never under any circumstances own another Honda.
Same story here on a Honda Pilot. Started shudder around K miles. I disagreed — felt like it was in drive train. My Honda CRV started shuddering between mph.
I took it to the dealer I bought it from who told me it was my tires being out of round. I was puzzled since my tires are less than a year old but I did take it to the tire dealer who informed me that they were fine.
I then took it back to Honda who racked it and showed my husband and myself that the tires were out of round. Once again, back to the tire shop who said it could probably use a frond end alignment. The Midas dealer did tell me that he was starting to see a lot of Hondas with the same problem and that it was usually the torque converter. They recommended we take the car to a professional transmission center for a diagnostics. We did just that and the news was BAD!
They confirmed that it was the transmission, probably the torque converter. I now have an appointment with Honda to fix the transmission or replace it. Hope it all goes well, will keep you posted. I have a with 86, miles serviced the car in dealership. Now I notice the r. I am afraid to take it to the dealer!
Does any one has an idea how much the dealers charge and if they give you any discounts? Find an independent Honda specialist in your area google it just type honda repair phoenix or whatever city you are in, if they have been in business 5 years or more they will take better care of you!
I assumed it was due to uneven tread wear as was explained to me by a mechanic friend. But even after all 4 tires that only had 20K on them were replaced, the shudders still happen. I have been a honda person for years.
Now have a Odd van. We also have a crv with torque problems, under warranty. Hate to say Hondas are not what they were. Unless you like a car that shakes at 28 or 41 miles an hr. Ford dealer is now helping with there warranty that I. Was informed by dealer that torque converter was bad and needed replacing fancy that!
They said it was covered under warranty — I suspect since they knew we were well informed. Any suggestions on the use of the dextron III vs honda transmission fluid? Sorry to hear you are having this problem. I would definitely stick to factory fluid on this one.
I have a Honda CR-V and experienced the shudder problem after the first years , miles when driving between 35 and 45 mph.
It was so bad that the dashboard rattled like crazy. They told me that Honda did not allow them to open up the transmission to find the exact problem. The problem lasted for years, but if I was going to have to change out the transmission, I decided to wait until it quit completely. After about years, the problem just about stopped. Hopefully new fluid and anti-shudder additive will do the trick for you as it did for this CRV owner:.
Not sure yet what this includes but reading all of these posts, it looks like we will be up for considerab;e cost. Running as new again. Brassing in the torque converter…You learn something new every day…!! I think I would be shopping for a new car…. Trans fluid and filter change. Add some Dr.
