Rainforest games to play outside

Amazon ants work together to find food, to protect their home and to protect their queen. Sometimes when a colony gets too large or if food becomes scarce, the ants begin a march to other parts of the rainforest to find a new home. You can simulate this activity and teach cooperation. In this game, an adult maps out a path that represents a river in the Amazon rainforest.

The children form two lines and hold hands to form a chain. The first line of "ants" to make it to the end of the river and a new home without breaking the chain wins the game. If a chain is broken, the "ants" have to return to the beginning of the river and start again. Tag can help teach children about the rainforest ecosystem and animal habitat. An adult prepares for the game by creating colourful animal tags with a picture and the name of an Amazon animal.

Large white adhesive labels make good tags. The adult designates "home" and different parts of the play yard as animal habitat. A bench can serve as the forest canopy where many birds live.

Players will pull an animal name out of the hat and try and get the others to guess the name of the jungle animal using only gestures and motions. Put a jungle-themed twist on classic party games. Instead of Hot Potato, play Rotten Banana. Play Pin the Tail on the Monkey or use animal-themed songs as the music for musical chairs.

This will enable the children to understand more about the type of weather that is found in the rainforest. Rainforest Art Draw and color a picture of a rainforest. As they finish, they dictate a few words about their pictures. Compile the papers into a class book. Talk to the children about the four levels of a rainforest.

The emergent level is the top level of the rainforest. The canopy is the next layer where monkeys, apes and exotic plants live. The canopy is like living under a big green umbrella. The understory is the next layer. It is the home of bats, frogs, butterflies and many other animals. Finally is the forest floor.

Rainforest Safari After taking about what animals live in the jungle, ask the children to draw and cut out three or more animals that live in the jungle.
